SOUND HERO

LINE-UP: KAN TAKAGI; EYE **

Blurb from Guitar Barrio entry: A new project with Eye and Takagi Kan of the Major Force label (sort of a Japanese equivalent of Mo' Wax, who refer to "the turntable as an artform"). The name means "pick up sound" (Hero is a pun on the Japanese word "hirou," to pick up). They played one show using a DJ mixer and turntable plus a Mini Disc and DAT containing sounds they recorded in the Amazon on a recent trip to Peru. They opened up for DJ Q-Bert in Osaka and Eye smashed over 100 "flea market" records (like Air Supply's), set them on fire and threw them into the audience.

U.F.O. OR DIE

U.F.O. or Die originally started life as Hasty Snail Baby, and consisted of Eye, Yoshimi (pre-Boredoms), and Yoshikawa. Katsumi quit and was replaced by Leningrad Blues Machine bassist Naoto Hayashi. The band is currently on hiatus.

JOHN ZORN & YAMANTAKA EYE--Complete Live in Hong Kong & China 1995, Places Including Shenzen, Guangzhou & Fushan (Sound Factory (Hong Kong)--SFCD:018--100 CD set) Unreleased (originally scheduled for Spring 1997)

Here's a description of the set according to Cory Li of Sound Factory (from an E-mail sent to a friend of mine, exactly as quoted):

"A speacial numbered limited edition of 100-CD per set with every CD having one song or more, some movement or a few tones; each CD length ranges from a few seconds to a few minutes, sometimes full-length. It will be kept as a secret & surprise when you receive it! Arranged, edited, mixed, re-arranged, re-edited, remixed & mastered into this project by JOHN ZORN & YAMANTAKA EYE personally. Therefore, lots of unexpected & "new" music/sound will be created from their touch ups. It won't be a strictly "live recording" album. Packed in a special roll-like kabub & warped with shrinkwrap all over into a hard cardboard box; each CD printed accordingly in rainbow colours; on top of the CD set (which serves as the cover) is the authorized signatures, printed edition no., and a statement from the artists, plus a few exclusive photos. 1000 sets available only, and strictly no repressing."

Here's some other texts about the box, including an explanation about its non-existence:

Ad in The Wire of July 96 (07/05/96):
"John Zorn + Yamantaka Eye "Live in China" 100 CDs set" The most ambitious and profound project recorded live during their 95 Chinatour: personally arranged & edited by Zorn, to be released as 100 CDs sets in an limited edition of 1000 with different length of music on each CD. Available on 5th September 96 from Sound Factory Records, 3/F, Seaview Centre, 139-141 Hoi Bun Road, Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Tel (852) 2345 8678 Fax (852) 2763 5755 e-mail: sfactory@speednet.net. pre-release mail order: US $250 (inc. P&P registered) after release mail order: US $350 (inc. P&P registered)."

Thanks to Brian Beuchaw for announcing its delayed release (09/05/96):
"Actually, according to Sound Factory (I emailed 'em about it), it's delayed until at least spring 97. :-("

Thanks to Barry Gilbert for extra precision (11/18/96):
"I spoke with Zorn at last night's show in Boulder. He said this set would be delayed until probably the fall. He also said that the shortest CD's would be about one second long."

Thanks to Steve Smith for the curious bit of info (08/30/97):
"What I wonder is, what happened to all the people who pre-paid for the 100 CD Zorn/Eye box, now that Sound Factory is officially defunct (a side-effect of Hong Kong's absorption into China, and not rumor but fact)?"

LINE-UP: GENE WEEN; DEAN WEEN; YAMANTAKA EYE**; GUESTS:YOSHIMI**--Trumpet on "God in My Bed"; YAMAMOTO**; YOSHIKAWA**; ANDREW WEISS; CLAUDE COLEMAN

Eye originally wanted the project to be called WeyeN and was disappointed with the name they chose instead. standard and CD Extra editions were pressed. The CD Extra features "Hexagon" and a program called Z-Wrap, which puts up a picture of bubble wrap that produces one of about 30 "mini-songs" when you "pop" the bubbles. Both seem to be out of print. A second album is supposed to be released soon on
Ipecac.

WHAT IS THE RAREST BOREDOMS SIDE PROJECT RECORDING?

According to a post by M. Rizzi on the (now-defunct) New-Music List:

"I almost forgot this other Yamatsuka Eye...er, I mean Yamantaka Eye tidbit from my recent trip to Japan.
"Eye was telling me about how the Karoake bars in Osaka have the capability to record a CD of the patron's evening of song for about $20 (they must be using that computer based recordable CD format).
"Eye talked about how he had them record his sing-along to 'Born To Be Wild.' Just the idea of this blew my mind. Unfortunately, he doesn't have it anymore. He went to a record shop (Forever 3 in Osaka, I believe) and sold it for like $70...and the store sold it for about $150 almost immediately.
"God, I would have loved to heard that. I guess none of us will either, but just thinking about it might be enough. Ha. I still laugh thinking of the possible looks the other customers must have had when he started screaming along to the bouncing ball.
"Boorrrrn The Be Wiraerararggggggggh!"

This CD was bought by Ozaki of Prisoner No. 6, is credited to Hanatarash, and also includes the children's song "Omocha no Cha Cha Cha" ("Toy Cha Cha Cha"). According to Ozaki (in an article he wrote about the CD in Exile Osaka #5), it also included one of Eye's teeth, which had been extracted by a dentist because it had a large cavity in it (and which continues to decay). He also bought the Boredoms EP Bon Bon Chiki Bon, which was also limited to one copy and sold for ¥100000 ($1000).
