Heart of the Party

"People want to know who this song is about. It comes from a time when I was single and going to parties and surrounded by infuriatingly happy people, including my ex. I felt like I was the only person who simply wanted to curl up on the floor and die. The drunken friends was the spirit of my partners--past and future."

Who will tell my drunken friend
that she will die and go to hell?
She sings la dee dee da, and if evil and sins
are people's beginnings, then I will be there
(for all those feet that keen and bells that ring)

Hear my call from the floor
at the heart of the party
(Always coming, guaranteed)

Hear my call from the floor
at the heart of the party
(Life's oven, always loving,
always coming, guaranteed)

Tiny Wounded Bird

"This was inspired by visiting Los Angeles and seeing how people lived crushed under the lies and bullshit of the tinsel-town mentality--the people who were destroyed trying to be one of the beautiful people. There were many more words here, but the music brought it down to four essential phrases to do with one person who I nursed like the bird of the title."

Tiny wounded bird
seeking respect
repairs to home
Foundling aspect

ANIMal

"The human body is basically disgusting. All your hopes and aspirations seem to die the day you look in the mirror and realize your container is decaying."

Animal crafted in my spine
Spending half my time in a hirsute tempo
Animal clothed in open fire
of a funeral pyre in a broken hostage

These are teats swung underneath
that crave deprave defy my virtue
These are teeth set in the breach
that cleave deceive reveal my hunger

Animal crafted in my spine
Spending half my time in a hirsute tempo
Animal pica vacuum jewel
In eternal duel with a failing reason

These are teats swung underneath
that crave deprave defy my virtue
These are teeth set in the breach
that cleave deceive reveal my hunger
These are coats held in a host
of pain disdain parade of ordure
These are claws that call for more
that rend defend pursue cold plunder

The Importance of Hair

"I was sort of thinking about Samson."

And now it's vital, ascendent and coiled
You could rely on a spirited pursuit
to touch on your toes, to lope for you dog-like
While wearing your colours it picks up your soul
And the journey's tolls
And now it's vital you call on my name
You wash your hands in my wastrel flames

CHORUS:
I would have though you would have caught the importance of hair
Folded in chains simply explains your cigarette not yet
(cigarette, heartache, cigarette)

Bones you were and bones you'll be
The scenery set in between
will fade away and soon reveal
the deals you made are history--CHORUS

Repetitive Strain Injury

[Cut-up backwards voice somehow gotten from this, and which sounded the same backwards as forwards:]
("You were always a singin' talent back in Houston.
Nashville's all you talked about.
Now that you're there,
you'll be famous, there's no doubt.")

Cabbalaland (with M.C. Newsagent)

Today we look at Jesus and the letters in His name.
We give each a number. 1 5 1 3 1.
Now note the three ones--you don't find that with Buddha!
This is the Holy Trinity.
1 5 1 3 1 & 1...we add these together and we achieve 3.
We have the Holy Spirit, the Holy Father and the Holy Son.

Snow

"Exorcising a relationship by making it into a nursery rhyme."

This time the little match girl has brought her own snow
Alone in the cold she draws her real name with the flames,
sifting around for prophecy
This sleep will test the morning--supposing--

CHORUS:
A heart full of bric-a-brac--pufferfish and staplegun
Crucifix and teddybear, sequins, eiderdown
Hatboxes--shared houses--plumber's helpers--bits of string
These foolish things help me forget you

This time the match girl is ruling by thumb
Counting the inches that lay in a lifetime of regrets--
she suspects--CHORUS

(So bad...Is alone so bad?)

Somewhere Over the Gigapus

"At one point in my life it seemed like everyone significant in my life was on a plane going somewhere, in a frenzied blur of travel agents. The trips buzzed around my head like flies. The movie was Under the Sheltering Sky, which was on when I was writing the track."

And while you sleep aircraft carry your head
They fly oblique to the oceans that you have chosen

CHORUS:
Maybe Honalulu on the 5th of November
Maybe Saigon on the 12th of May
Maybe Eastern Sydney in the middle of autumn
Maybe spring in Tokyo Bay
Maybe in a movie in the middle of Africa
Maybe in a muddle by the IRA
Maybe in a photobooth, maybe in a car
Maybe, just maybe you'll live from afar

And while you sleep the cargo cult unloaded your life
It prayed to your dreams
It predicted your demise--CHORUS

And while you sleep...

About Leah and Adele

("About Leah, she, she's like a child in her mind, this Leah, and, uh...but very stubborn sometimes--and suspicious of things when, sometimes things get cured--other times she gets suspicious and things get broken up, so without this attitude her life would be much more happier--and the second one, Adele...")

("Adele, Adele is full of life, but recently she got into a lot of trouble with life and emotionally she got distant and her health bad and she become a little psychiatric sort of attitude, but she will become perfect in about another two years' time, and she will definitely find the right man in her life and that life will be full and blossom although this man may not be from this part of the world."
"Uh-huh. Interesting.")

("About Leah...Adele.")

Nightime Falls

("...of these walls, four lonely walls, when nightime falls...")
